Today we began our 9th year of a monthly census route on Kelleys Island.  Today's weather was beautiful with visibility the best I can remember.  Mainland Canada was visible from the island. Most of the lake was open with some large sheets of slushy ice flows.  Most of these were covered with gulls but few were close to the island.  Passerines were few in number and sparrows absent.  The 41 species observed was above average(39) and the 18069 individuals was a January record.  T.
