Snow cover 6-8 inches of new snow. Beautiful everywhere on the island. Ring-necked Duck, Northern Harrier, Hairy Woodpecker, and Tufted Titmouse were new for January count. This the first January we have missed Mallard and Bufflehead. The open water was to the east and at least ¼ to ½ mile out so it was very tough to id species. The south, west and north were frozen as far as we could see, all though we could see a big ship west of Pelee and Middle Islands with a big crane on it. They must have been looking for the missing plane from last weekend. We had 46 species in 2002 so this is our second highest January count.
