December Bird Census

The Kelleys
Island monthly census for December was scheduled
for Sunday, December 16 as part of the Lake Erie
Islands Christmas Count. However, midway through
the morning both were cancelled due to very
limited visibility and drifting snow. June
Campbell, Sandy Tkach, and I had attempted the
census even though others had all ready backed
out. I did forgo the morning owling. But phone
calls with compiler, John Pogacnik and Lisa
Brohl on South Bass convinced us to cancel. We
rescheduled for Monday morning which turned out
much better. John will handle the details of the
"very limited" Islands Christmas count.
We conducted the census from 0800-1300 under
overcast to partly cloudy skies, 18-27 F
temperature, 5-20 mile per hour SSW winds, and
8+ inches of snow cover. 53 species were
observed consisting of 8923 individuals. Two new
species were added to the December census. Those
were Snow Bunting and Common Redpoll. This is
the eleventh year for the December count. ~~Tom
