Andropogon gerardi, Big Bluestem (also called Turkey Foot)
A Grass growing in clumps, which is found in the abandoned quarries.  Big Bluestem was once the dominant species of the tall grass prairies and an ideal grazing food for livestock.

Hedyotis nigricans, Bluet
Slender plant, 5-8” high with a tiny white flower.  It is found in the quarries and along the dry edges of Bookerman Road in June and July.  

Cornus drummondii, Roughleaf Dogwood
This genus of dogwood is widespread on the Island, growing as tall as 15 feet.
It provides berries in the fall for migrating birds.  

Rhus aromatica, Fragrant Sumac 
The shrub has a cone like, yellow flower in May, which turns into red berries in June.  Leaves have a spicy fragrance when crushed.  Its clumps are widespread 
on the Island and in abundance on Scheele Preserve.  

Physocarpus opulifolius, Ninebark
Pinkish flowers in June on a shrub, which grows 3-10’ high in the old quarries.   
Old bark peels off the branches in layers.   

Potentilla anserina, Silverweed
A low plant with yellow flowers in July and leaves, which are silvery beneath.   

Allium cernuum, Nodding Wild Onion
This plant with white flower clusters “nodding” can be found on Monagan Road in bloom in July.  It is not seen in Northeastern Ohio.  

Aquilegia canadensis, Wild Columbine
Scarlet flowers with a yellow center which flowers in May.  Found on the North Shore Loop at the Kelleys Island State Park in shaded areas.   

Ptelea trifoliata, Wafer Ash 
Also called Hop Tree is a shrub which sometimes reaching a height of 15 feet.  Common along Monagan Road. It has round, winged fruits.   The leaflets are “oily” when crushed.   

Xanthoxylum americanum, Northern Prickly Ash 
This shrub can grow as high as 25”.   It has small, greenish flowers.

 

Non-native Plants  

            There are two non-native plants, which are widespread on Kelleys Island. 

Alliaria petiolata, Garlic Mustard 
This plant blooms in June and has a white flower and heart shaped leaves.      

Anthriscus sylvestris, Wild Chervil 
This plant is widespread in May and early June, 1 1/2’ high with a small white flower.  The plant begins to disappear in mid June.
