Scutellinia Scutellata

Common Name: Eyelash Peziza

Etymology:
From Latin, "bowl-shaped" or "flat."

Habitat:
Gregarious on decomposed wood or damp ground.

Season: Spring to late fall.

Note:
Although small, this is a fairly conspicuous fungus because of its bright color and because it grows in groups.
 

 

Hygrophorus Eburneus

Etymology: From Latin, "Ivory-white".

Habitat:  Grgarious, in broadleaf woods and grassland.

Season: Summer and Autumn.

 

 



Coprinus Silvaticus

Etymology: From Latin, "of woods."

Habitat:
Usually on rotting wood, quite often on the ground or leaf litter, possibly associated by the mycellium with buried wood, tufted.

Season: Spring to the first winter frost.

Note:
This is one of Coprinus species that look more or less alike in the field.


 

Inonotius Hispidus

Etymology: From Latin, "hirsute" or "hairy."

Habitat: Parasitic on various broadleaf species, including ash, mulberry, oak, and willow; also reported on pine and fir.

Season:
Summer and Autumn, but present all year.

 



Polyporus Squamosus

Etymology: From Latin, "scaled."

Habitat: Parasitic on various broadleaf species.

Season: Spring through Autumn.

Note: This fungus is fairly abundant in eastern spring woods, especially on elms.

 



Ganoderma Tsugae

Habitat: On trunks and stumps of Eastern Hemlock.

Season: An annual species, which grows in summer and autumn.

Note: The stipe may be fairly well developed and may be either on the same level as the cap or perpendicular to it and erect.
 



Fistulina Hepatica

Common Name: Ox-tongue fungus; poor man's beefsteak; beefsteak fungus.

Etymology: From Greek, "liver like."

Habitat: On broadleaf trunks and stumps, especially oak and chestnut.

Note: Unlike most polypores whose tubes are fused, this fungus has clearly separated tubes.

 



Phaeolus Schweinitzii

Etymology: After the mycologist, Schweinitzii.

Habitat: On coniferous stumps and roots.

Season: Summer and autumn.

Note: This fungus is commonly found with grasses growing up through the fruit-body.

 


 

Paxillus Involutus

Etymology: From Latin, "curly-edged."

Habitat: In wet woodland, particularly broadleaf.

Season: Early summer to late fall.

Note: Grows near Aspen.

 

Calvatia Gigantea

Common Name: Giant puffball.

Etymology: From Latin "Gigantic".

Habitat: In meadows, fields, and gardens.

Season: Summer and Autumn.

Notes: This fungus can become very large, weights of up to 56 pounds have been documented.

Season: Spring to early winter.

Note: This fungus is fairly abundant in eastern spring woods, especially on elms.
